MTSU Academic Advising Kick Off- Day 1
Advisor Mastery Program (AMP) Workshops
These workshops will focus primarily on advisor skill-building and knowledge-building. Potential topics include:
- Technical/Software/Administrative skills (Excel, TEAMS, ARGOS, reading high school transcripts, etc.)
- Advising approaches and best practices
- Legal/Ethical issues in advising
- Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion
Workshops will be offered twice a month, and will generally be worth 1 point (unless otherwise stated). Workshops will vary in terms of being offered in-person or via zoom.

BIOS:
Dr. Kim Godwin is an Assistant Professor for the College of Education at Middle Tennessee State University. She teaches in the Womack Educational Leadership Department in graduate programs for higher education administration and student affairs. Her areas of research focus on Universal Design for Learning, online teaching and learning, and the promotion of open educational (OER) and open access resources (OAR). She has co-authored four Pressbooks and a Chapter on OER for the upcoming Handbook of Research in Online Learning due out in spring 2024. Prior to this role, Dr. Godwin served for many years as an instructional designer for MTSU Online, supporting the development of hundreds of online courses while promoting online teaching best practices through campus, regional, and international presentations.
Dr. Godwin resides just outside Nashville, TN with her partner where they are the proud parents of three giant breed dogs. Kim and Will, her partner, foster and care for senior Great Danes, Mastiffs, and other giants that need a safe place to land, 35 fosters in the last 14 years. In addition, she is a believer in the one true sport of football as a fan of the Tennessee Titans and The Ohio State University, though suspects that her love for the buckeyes might cause problems for some.
Dr. Mark Taylor is a first-generation college student from West Virginia, who has devoted his entire career to academic advising and student success. With over 20 years of leadership experience in higher education, he has provided advising leadership at four public universities, including campus-wide leadership at three of those institutions. As Assistant Provost and Senior Assistant Dean at the University of Kentucky, he led academic advising across 12 undergraduate colleges and directed the university’s advising operation for exploratory students.
Mark also was the Director of Advising in the College of Liberal Arts at the University of Minnesota, providing leadership for over 70 team members throughout 9 advising offices and 15 academic departments. Prior to that time, he worked directly with undergraduates as an Associate Director in the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania. Mark began his career as an academic advisor and instructor at Florida State University, teaching prelaw, ethics, and career development courses.
He has delivered in recent years over 40 presentations at national institutes and conferences and for nine years led a daylong academic advising administration and leadership preconference workshop at the NACADA annual conference. Mark has authored monograph chapters on academic advisor career ladders, performance evaluations, credentials, and salaries. He served on the faculty of the NACADA Academic Advising Administrators’ Institute for 11 years and most recently has represented the advising profession as a consultant and speaker.
Mark graduated Phi Beta Kappa from Furman University with a BA in Political Science. He also holds a JD from the University of Richmond School of Law and PhD in Higher Education from Florida State University.
