Like a perfect poker hand, participants will learn five powerful strategies for creating sustainable advising environments where both leaders and teams can thrive. Through guided exercises and meaningful discussion, discover how to move from reactive management to mindful leadership. Participants will leave with practical techniques for managing workplace stress, fostering team wellbeing, maintaining boundaries, and building resilience.
If we decide on an Option 2 - Stepping Up: Transforming Managers into Effective Leaders - Managers in academic advising often oversee processes without fully embodying leadership. This session explores practical steps to shift from task-based oversight to active leadership. It draws on John Kotter's change management concepts, Simon Sinek's focus on purpose, Brene Brown's exploration of vulnerability, Beverly Daniel Tatum's insights on identity, Liz Wiseman's multiplier effect, and Mae Jemison's perspective on curiosity. Attendees will learn methods for inspiring collaboration, building trust, and establishing a clear vision. The session connects proven leadership theories to real-world team and team member scenarios. It offers methods for guiding teams in dynamic environments. The session will benefit aspiring, new, and seasoned supervisors, by providing strategies to influence positive change and support professional growth. It demonstrates how leadership sustains motivation and drives continuous improvement.
