Advisor Mastery Program (AMP) Reading Group

Each semester will focus on one specific text, and the reading will be broken into four manageable portions. Everyone is welcome to participate. Reading groups will be capped at a certain number of participants to better facilitate discussion, so it is possible that there will be multiple zoom reading discussions running at once. Each reading session is typically worth 1 point (unless stated otherwise below).

Join us this semester for AMP Reads as we dive into The Pedagogy of Real Talk, a powerful exploration of authentic, culturally responsive communication in education. This book challenges educators and advisors to move beyond surface-level conversations and engage in meaningful dialogue that builds trust, affirms identity, and supports student success.

Through guided discussion and reflection, participants will examine how “real talk” can strengthen advising relationships, promote equity-minded practice, and create spaces where students feel heard and valued. We’ll explore practical ways to apply the book’s concepts to everyday advising interactions—especially when navigating difficult conversations, supporting diverse student populations, and fostering a sense of belonging.
