Womack Educational Leadership Department

Welcome to the Womack Department of Educational Leadership, a part of the College of Education. Students who wish to teach at the secondary level will pursue a minor in Secondary Education through the Ready2Teach Program.

The Educational Leadership Department offers several graduate level programs that will help prepare new teachers or will help veteran teachers who wish to pursue leadership or supervisory roles. Local cohort groups allow students to pursue degrees within their communities. Faculty advisors work with students so that individual and professional needs can be met as students pursue graduate degrees.

Please see the list of academic programs the department offers by clicking on the tab at left.

The department name honors the legacy of Dr. Bob Womack, a 1948 graduate who taught future teachers from 1953 until shortly before his death in 2010, and his family. From an uncle, Price Womack, who graduated in 1928, to his wife Elizabeth and four children, all are MTSU graduates, and his two daughters are themselves teachers.

In addition to encouraging public service for his family and students, Womack was known for encouraging and expecting students to think for themselves. His lifework included helping future students become the top-notch teachers MTSU has produced since its founding in 1911. His family established an endowment fund that ultimately will provide more than a half-million dollars in faculty and scholarship support for MTSU’s education program.

The department also participates in two doctoral programs offered through the College of Education: a Ph.D. in Literacy Studies and an Ed.D. in Assessment, Learning, and Student Success.
